I am always so late to write reviews for some of my favorite dining experiences; for those great places it always seems like another gushing review would just be redundant. But I am not exaggerating when I say GW Fins was one of the best meals I have ever had. Service was stellar, the kind of knowledgeable helpful servers you hope for who keep the pace good, recommendations if welcomed, and make it look easy. We went all out, with some great wine, the shrimp and grits appetizer, followed by the scallibut and the tuna ribeye. These are two amazingly unique dishes and I would recommend to anyone visiting for the first time. Putting the scallops on top of the halibut ensure that both get the absolute perfect cook. I don't know who had the idea on that cut of tuna and the dry aging, but it is one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth. If you are going to be in NOLA, I know that there is so much good food to be had, but I think you would be hard-pressed to have a better meal than here.
Amazing service! So kind! They come around giving fresh bread. They fold your napkin when you leave the table. The food is delicious. Never thought watermelon and pork belly go well together, but it was so good! All the flavors complement each other well.
- scalibut: 10/10 - new bedford scallops: 10/10, scallops were seared perfectly on top of mushroom risotto - tempura fin wings: 7/10, cooked nice and crispy while the fish was still soft and tender - crispy grouper belly: 5/10, overall flavor a bit lacking. very similar to the appetizer we ordered (tempura fin wings) and im not sure why the waiter didn't mention to us we were basically ordering two of the same thing! - salty malty ice cream pie: 10/10 this was delicious - complimentary biscuits: 10/10, the biscuits were warm, buttery, soft. so good i had 4 LOL others in my group ordered the tuna meatballs, scallop carbonara, scalibut and enjoyed their dishes. the scallop carbonara was good but did not have the usualy carbonara taste the vibe of the restaurant is slightly more on the upscale side. they do have notices stating you are not allowed to wear flip flops so that is something to be aware of. everyone is dressed pretty nicely! service was great
Aaron and his crew really took care of us. From drinks to dessert. We enjoyed the barracuda, scalibut. But the star was definitely the barracuda. We also tried their take on fried oysters. It's almost like a fried Oyster banh mi. Delicious. Both main dishes had great flavor and presentation. For dessert, probably the best creme brulee I've ever had. If you are in town I definitely recommend dining here. Get reservations and I do believe they have some dress policy but it does not require a coat.
The food delicious. And the Gw fin wings were recommended to start which was the right choice baybeh the service was great. Claude was super attentive and provided the feedback to elevate our experience.
Outstanding food, service and ambience. New Bedford scallops, Mangrove Snapper, Lobster Dumplings, and oh those biscuits. Noelle's service was an 11 out of 10. We will be back as soon as we get back to NOLA!
Pros: Best restaurant we went to when we were in New Orleans. Hands down. The restaurant was beautiful, felt really upscale and classy. Service was top notch. There was a specific server for bread and everything! And the food, oh my goodness the food. They are doing amazing experiments with seafood here. Cons: Literally not a one. Tips: Get the scallibut, get the dry-aged tuna, get every appetizer they offer. This place is perfect.
GW Fins is without a doubt, one of the best seafood restaurants I've been too in a long time. This place has been recommend by nearly every restaurant guide in New Orleans and it really doesn't disappoint. The lobster bisque was delicious. The halibut was is their signature dish and really goes well with the risotto. I also got the creme brulee, which both people beside me got as well after seeing me get out. As for cocktails, you can't go wrong with the Cajun old fashioned and the French 75. It's highly recommend that you set reservations, as it was one of the busiest restaurants in New Orleans.
After reading hundreds of reviews for different restaurants, I decided that GW Fins was one of the very best in NOLA. It absolutely was the highlight meal during our trip. I was nervous that there no reservations available for the weekend dinner that I wanted. My boyfriend and I showed up right at opening and managed to snag a table by the bar. Ambiance is classy but not stuffy. Every server we had was friendly and delightful. Our meal first started with their complimentary hot biscuits. These were fresh out of the oven and incredibly soft, buttery, and flavorful. For entrees, we tried the dry aged blue fin tuna and the American red snapper, as recommended by our server. We absolutely loved both dishes. The blue fin tuna was unique and so so tender. The red snapper was a quintessential dish of New Orleans with a flavorful stew and perfectly cooked snapper. Lastly, we ended our meal with the salty malty ice cream pie. After seeing the rave reviews, I knew we had to try it. It is the perfect balance of sweet and salty, and we truly indulged with every bite. Thank you GW Fins for such a memorable and delicious meal!
I came to New Orleans in December for the holiday season, and I was enraptured in the beauty of the city that was decorated for the holidays, the amazingly fun Creole culture of the city, and the culinary deliciousness that seemed to be on every corner. I heard that GW Fins was on of the best places in town, and that they had some truly unique dishes, so I decided to give it a shot. Nestled in the French Quarter, the restaurant is very beautiful inside. Think upscale pirate ship in a fish bowl. Very spacious, very nice décor. Service was absolutely top notch. Think the kind of place that has one guy who's whole job is to give you your free biscuits. That's classy. So we got seated and got started. I'll open up with that very bread. The biscuit was wonderful. Soft, crisp, flakey, chewy, absorbent of all the various juices from our meal. I think I ate six of these suckers. Don't be afraid to ask for more. Then came the real app, the Tempura Fin Wings (Crispy noodle salad, Korean glaze). I don't use all caps very often, but OH MY GOD. This was the dish of the trip. My favorite dish of the whole trip. As crispy and stickily sauced as Korean fried chicken. Huge hunks of perfectly cooked fish meat give you the Exact feeling of eating wings. I cannot praise this creation enough. Order this. The other app was the Lobster Dumplings (White fish mousseline, tomatoes, lobster butter). These lovely, delicate little dumplings were small, but they were packed with flavor! Filled with that unctuous mousseline, drenched with that unctuous lobster butter. It was truly decadent, but in a delicate way. I don't know how else to describe it. It was delicious. For the entrees, we got two very unique things that I've never seen anywhere else. I love that. For mine, I got the Scalibut (GW Fins original, halibut, sea scallops, Royal Red shrimp risotto, snow peas, pea shoot butter). I also got to try the Dry Aged Yellowfin Tuna Ribeye (Grilled rare, Yukon potatoes, braised Swiss chard, black garlic bordelaise). Ok, follow me here. So the scalibut was scallops that were sliced and affixed to the top of a halibut filet. Why would anyone do this? I don't know, but I am very glad they did. The subtle sweetness of the perfectly seared scallops and the lean flakiness of the buttery halibut melded in my mouth like some sort of delicious Frankenstein's Monster. Pair that with a shrimp risotto? Get out of town. Freaking lovely. In addition to that madness, they're also dry aging tuna. Grilled rare, this thing literally melted in your mouth. Unlike any tuna, or anything dry aged, I've ever had. We had a cool server, luckily, and swip-swapped the sides. We got the sides that came with the swordfish, because they just sounded better. And no regrets. We built the perfect dish. Thank you if you've come all this way and are still reading this. I'll wrap this up soon. For dessert, we had the Salty Malty Ice Cream Pie (Pretzel crust, caramel whipped cream). And yea, you guessed it. This it was also amazing. A solid block of perfectly textured salty malty ice cream with some drizzle here, some whipped cream there, and a nice little chocolatey pretzel on top. This was the meal of the trip for us. If Michelin was in New Orleans, this place would have a star, I know it. So in the meantime, I'll just have to do what I can by spreading around good word of mouth.
